Vaginal Yeast Infection Home Remedy

What is Yeast Infection?

The vaginal yeast is known as 'yeast infection', or 'candida'. The candida naturally exists in the vagina. The overgrowth of the bacteria is primarily caused by Ph imbalance resulting in white and lumpy discharge known as 'yeast infection'. The Ph imbalance can be induced by commercial douches. In reality, there is no need to douche, mother nature takes care itself. The overgrowth can also be induced by pregnancy, diabetes, use of antibiotics, high level of estrogen, and birth control pills.
In United States, many over the counter medications such as Monistat are available. These medicines basically kill and reduce the amount of candida.

Home Remedy

You only need four items at home, Dahi (natural yogurt with live culture), cranberry juice, white vinegar and water.
1. Douche with Dahi/water solution (One cup of water to Three cups of Dahi). This will reduce the population of candida. In United States, most of the commercial packers also add Acidophilus to the live culture. This yogurt works better than just Dahi.

You can also wear a tampon dipped in yogurt for four hours at a time, two times a day.

In lieu of Dahi, you can use 'tea tree oil'. Tea tree oil from Australia has been found effective in treating yeast. You can buy it at most of the health stores and drug stores. Apply lubricant such as KY jelly to the tampon. Then apply about 5 to 8 drops of pure Tea tree oil. Wear the tampon for about hours at a time, two times a day.

2. Drink unsweetened cranberry juice

3. Douche with vinegar/water solution (One tablespoon of vinegar to One quart of water). This helps to balance Ph.

Prevention

1. Underwear and pantyhose should have cotton crotches for exposure to air circulation.

2. Reduce exposure to wet clothing in the crotch area. The clothing may be wet due to sweating, swimming. Do not re-wear wet garment without washing.

3. Take multi-B Vitamin supplements. Vitamins B3, B5, and B6 will help improve your immune system.

Diet therapy Do's & Don'ts

1. Do eat natural yogurt with live culture without any sugar or sweeteners
2. Do incorporate raw minced garlic in your curries
3. Do reduce the amount of sugar intake. Don't eat sweets soaked in syrup (examples: Rasgulla, Rasmalai, Gulab Jamun, Jalebi).
4. Do reduce caffeine intake (examples: Coffee, carbonated beverages)
5. Do reduce using products made from refined flours such as Maida (All purpose flour, cake flour).
6. Do drink a lot of water
7. Do drink unsweetened cranberry juice
8. Do reduce alcohol intake.
Note: Some people suggest not to eat products made with yeast. Candida is not same as the yeast used to make breads, cake or Naan. Also, the yeast dies during cooking. So, its not the yeast used to make these products, it comes back to sugar and refined flours.
