What are topical astringents?Topical astringents are used to firm up (tone) the skin. Astringents slightly coagulate skin proteins, dry and harden the skin, shrink the pores, and restore acid mantle (protective layer). Astringents are applied after cleansing the skin but before applying moisturizers.
Topical application helps heal stretch marks, reduce the scars from acne, superficial cuts while shaving, allergy (hives), fungal infection.
Common astringents are: Ajwain (Carom), Calamine lotion, Cucumber, Oatmeal, Rose water, Rubbing Alcohol, Witch hazel, Zinc
If you have Acne, astringents must be used with care. Astringents dry out the skin that is good for the Acne sufferers. Astringents may also clog up the pores causing more bacterial growth and worsening the Acne. Rubbing Alcohol is the harshest astringent. It is very helpful for new pimples when applied with a q-tip on the pimple about three times a day, but do not wash your face with rubbing alcohol.
In the cosmetics industry, topical astringents are sold as Skin Toners. |
