Traditional Post Partum Foods for Nursing Mothers

After delivery during nursing, mothers are given 'Hot Foods' to help recuperate from the labor, and increase production of breast milk

Basically 'Hot Foods' are 'high calorie and high protein' foods.

 

Hot Foods

Non-vegetarian: Lamb, Chicken, Fish, Eggs

 

Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, Pistachios, Walnuts, Chirongi, Watermelon seeds, Cantaloupe seeds, Pumpkin seeds, Dried Coconut

 

Dried Fruits: Raisins, Dry Dates (Chhohara), Apricots, Prunes

 

Spices: Dried ginger root (Saunth), Ajwain, Cayenne pepper, Gond, Lotus seeds (Makhna), Kamarkas, Asgandh, Safed Musali, Pippal, Pippali, Ganth Pippal

Ajwain is considered as an internals cleansers.

 

Sugars: Mishree (Rock Candy), honey, jaggery

 

Fats: Ghee, and lots of it

 

Dense flesh fruits: Papaya, Banana, Pineapple

 

Starchy vegetables: Potatoes, Eggplant, Okra, Jackfruit

 

Cold Foods

Cold Foods cause infant diarrhea and digestive tract discomforts including gas and bloating. These include yogurt and butter milk, vegetables, fresh  fruits.

 

Most common sweets made are as follows

Besan Burfee | Cashew (Kaju) Katli | Gond ke Laddu | Gond Panjiri

Add Ajwain in the regular recipes the first 40 postpartum days

 

Ajwain (Carom) water First 3 postpartum days
