Common problems during Pregnancy

Heightened sense of smell Nausea, Aversions and Cravings, Pica, Hypertension and constipation are common problems

During pregnancy, if any of the complications seem out of control, OB/GYN should be consulted immediately.

Nausea

Nausea and vomiting is a common occurrence. This can be reduced by eating low-fat and high Carbs with least smell. Slices of fresh ginger roots soaked in sweetened lime or lemon juice also helps. Ginger Sticks to help with morning sickness .

Aversions and Cravings

Aversions and cravings have nothing to do with some deficiency in the nutritional health of the pregnant mother. To reduce aversion, pregnant mothers should eat foods that are either raw (salads and fruits) served at room temperature than heated foods. Another common aversion is about meats. Most common cravings are tamarind, raw mango, guava, Ber and Jamun, and raw rice. Remember, vegetarian foods provide as much nutrition as the meats, so it should not be a concern.

Pica

Some pregnant women start eating pieces of clay dirt, ice etcetera which have no nutritional value. This is normally associated with iron deficiency. Most common pica foods in India are baked clay (fragments from Choolah, Tandoor, clay pots & tumblers) and charcoal.

Hypertension

This is caused by stress, low caloric intake and low protein intake. Do Not limit sodium to resolve this. Normal sodium intake is needed support expansion of tissues and fluids.

Constipation

Constipation is common. Foods high in dietary fiber such as whole-grains, and fresh fruits along with sufficient water intake resolve this problem. Fresh fruits high in vitamin C help reduce constipation and provide for efficient absorption of iron.
