In India, Henna (Mehndi), and Indigo (Neel) have been used to dye hair for centuries. Both are natural colorants and color the outer layer with a transparent color. These dyes can last several shampoo cycles.

Color of henna varies from light to dark red, depending on the cultivation season, soil condition, as well as the age of the powder.

Indigo is dark blue. In United States, Indigo s used to dye cotton fabric to make blue denim clothing such as jeans.

Combination of Henna and Indigo produce shades of purple.

Amla, Black tea, Beet roots, Cinnamon, Cloves, and Turmeric powder are added to adjust the colors.

Small amount of fresh lime juice is added as an acid to help depositing the colorant and let it last longer.
