Pregnancy, Constipation and Diet
Constipation affects at least half of all pregnant women. The pregnancy hormones slow down the passage of food through digestive tract. The growing uterus compresses the intestine with the weight as well as puts a pressure on the rectum. Constipation is made worse with Iron supplements.
Basic dietary and lifestyle guidelines are same as for population at large for constipation .
During pregnancy, a diet rich in fiber (grains, vegetables, fruits, and dried cooked beans), along with 10 to 12 cups of fluids every day will be beneficial.
