Homemade Cold Cream RecipeHome recipe for cold cream without mineral oil for over-night skin treatment for dry skin
What is cold cream? It is a mixture of oil, wax, and water. Mild alkali is added as an emulsifier. In 200 AD, a physician named Galen is credited by formulating the first cold cream. During 1910s, Pond's cold cream became a standard world wide. Cold cream is used as an effective cleanser to remove make up, and dirt. When left on over night, it softens skin and relieves dryness.
Traditionally, cold cream is made with wax, mineral oil and water. The mineral oils in the long run actually dehydrates the skin. I have substituted mineral oil with number of other oils to nurture our skin. For ease, we will use microwave oven and an electric blender. Borax, and wax are not considered as good ingredients by today's knowledge. Compare with Face Mayonnaise (Cold Cream) Recipe
Ingredients1. Distilled water: ¼ cup 2. Borax: 1/8th teaspoon 3. Glycerin: 1 teaspoon 4. Beeswax grated: 2 Tablespoons 5. Olive oil: 3 Tablespoons 6. Almond oil: 2 Tablespoons 7. Avocado oil: 2 Tablespoons 8. Grape seed oil: 1 teaspoon 9. Wheat germ oil: 2 teaspoon Method1. You can use a double boiler to melt wax and combine it with oil, as you would do to melt chocolate and combine with cocoa butter. Instead, I will use a microwave oven. In a large glass bowl put beeswax and oil. Microwave 30 seconds to melt the wax. Mix. Repeat microwave heating and mixing till it is a nice uniform paste. 2. In another glass bowl, put water, glycerin, and borax. Heat in microwave for about 45 second. Stir. Make sure borax is consumed in hot water. Water should be almost boiling. 3. Add borax water to wax/oil paste. Beat and whip. You should have a white frothy mixture. 4. Transfer contents to Glass Jar. After it cools tighten the lid. It will take overnight for the mixture to get thick and settle. |
