Acne Treatments

You do not need to treat mild acne that is not inflamed. Mild acne normally goes away on its own without scarring

Inflamed Acne should be treated, it can leave scarring. Inflammation develops around the blocked pores as a response by body's natural immune system. This leads to skin redness and larger spots forming (pustules, nodules and cysts).

 

Benzoyl peroxide Topical preparations

This has three actions: Kills bacteria, reduce swelling, and unplug pores.

This is available over the counter in most of the drug stores in United States. It is available as:  2.5%, 4%, 5%, and 10%. Start with the lowest concentration, as it may irritate the skin. Chose a water based formula and NOT alcohol based formula. Wash your face with warm water about 30 minutes before applying the treatment.

Salicylic acid Topical preparations

Helps skin to dry out and peel. It can help eliminate pimples.

This is available over the counter in most of the drug stores in United States

Retinoids Topical preparations

Help unplug blocked pores (blackheads, whiteheads, mild inflamed pimples), may reduce inflammation. Common formulations: Adapalene, Tretinoin, and Isotretinoin. Prescription is required in United States.

Don not use if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.

Topical Antibiotics

It kills bacteria and reduce inflammation. Not very useful with blackheads or whiteheads.

Available through prescription by a physician

Isotretinoin Tablets

It reduces the amount of sebum made by the skin glands. Effective for severe acne.

Must consult a physician

Antibiotic Tablets

Primarily used to kill bacteria, and reduce inflammation. Not useful with blocked pores (Blackheads and Whiteheads). Normally prescribed along with Benzoyl peroxide Topical preparations.

Common antibiotics prescribed are: Oxytetracycline, Tetracycline, Doxycycline, Lymecycline and Minocycline.

Hormone treatment

Contraceptive pill (dianette) contains hormones that help reduce acne and also act as contraceptive.

 

Laser and Light Treatments

The lights are used to damage the oil glands under the skin surface reducing the production of oil. The Blue ;light targets and destroys the bacteria that cause the inflammation. Pulsed light shrinks the oil glands. Diode lasers can destroy sebaceous glands under the skin surface.

 

Microdermabrasion

A handheld device is used to blow crystals against the skin to 'polish' the skin surface. It exfoliates and unclogs the pores.
