Weight loss, and Balancing Vata and Kapha

To lose weight, Vata needs to be increased, and Kapha needs to be decreased by eating more pungent astringent and bitter foods.
Ayurveda classifies foods according to their Rasa (tastes). One should consume foods consisting of all the six tastes for optimum health. The six tastes are: Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter, Pungent, and Astringent. Human body consists of three Dosha. Dosha are the basic constitutional processes for the physical and mental health. The three Dosha are: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Sweet Sour and Salty foods balance (decrease) Vata, and aggravate (increase) Kapha. Bitter Pungent and Astringent foods aggravate (increase) Vata, and balance (decrease) Kapha.
Continued chronic aggravated Kapha can cause weight gain, high cholesterol, diabetes, and hypertension. To lose weight, we should decrease but not eliminate salty sweet and sour foods. At the same time, to lose weight we should increase bitter astringent and pungent foods.

Spices and Weight Loss

Spices can help in losing weight, most of the spices used in Indian cooking are Pungent, Astringent or Bitter. We should not eliminate but need to reduce salt sugar and souring agents such as Tamarind, Amchoor, or Lime juice. Eliminating salty sweet and sour foods could aggravate Vata and lead to digestive disorders, dryness, anxiety, and poor maintenance and regeneration of tissues. We can not eat bitter pungent and astringent foods in excess, it could lead to heart diseases, peptic ulcers, and sexual debility
Effective spices are: Hot chili peppers, Black or White peppercorns, Cinnamon, Cassia, Fenugreek
