What is the body mass index (BMI)?The Body Mass Index (BMI) uses a mathematical formula based on the height and weight to determine body fat. BMI= kg/m2, where 'kg' is the weight in kilograms, and 'm' is the height in meters.
BMI does not provide percent of body fat. It serves as a good indicator for adults between the ages of 19 and 70 years of age. It is not a good indicator for body builders, athletes and pregnant women.
Normal BMI is greater than 19 and less than 25 for all adults over 19 years of age. Obesity is defined when BMI equals or exceeds 30, at which point the subject exceeds 30 pounds beyond healthy weight. |
