Calcium Daily Requirements

The National Academy of sciences has established Adequate Intake requirements by age as follows:
0 to 6 months: 210 mg/day

7 to 12 months: 270 mg/day

1 to 3 years: 500 mg/day

4 to 8 years: 800 mg/day

9 to 18 years: 1300 mg/day
19 to 50 years: 1000 mg/day

51+ years: 1200 mg/day
1. The Calcium absorption among infants and growing children can be as high as 60% than adults. They need more Calcium to increase bone size and bone mass as well as the teeth. Bone mass continues to increase till the age 30.
2. Calcium absorption declines over age 51, the daily intake requirement is increased. In case of women, menopause makes the absorption worse.

3. During pregnancy, the efficiency of Calcium absorption increases. Therefore the daily Calcium requirements are same for woman whether they are pregnant or not.
