EER and BMI Calculator

Enter weight height age gender and physical activity level, and find out your BMI and EER for various body weights

This is a combination calculator based on tables provided by the IOM. It calculates the Body Mass Index, and generates energy requirements for current weight, weight at different levels of body mass index (median, minimum, maximum).

Estimated Energy Requirement (EER)

EER is the amount of energy required to maintain current body weight depending on the age, gender, and physical activity level for a reference sized individual. The 'Reference size' is based on median height and weight for ages 2 to 18 years. After the age of 18, the reference size is based on median height and weight with a BMI of 21.5 for females and 22.5 for males. The physical activity is defined as a lifestyle.
a) SEDENTARY lifestyle that includes only the physical activity of independent living.
b) LOW ACTIVE lifestyle includes physical activity equivalent to walking about 1.5 to 3 miles per day at 3 to 4 miles per hour, in addition to sedentary life style.
c) ACTIVE lifestyle includes physical activity equivalent to walking more than 3 miles per day at 3 to 4 miles per hour, in addition to sedentary life style.

I have also elected to perform BMI calculations. This enables you to determine EER and weight at various BMI levels.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body Mass Index (BMI) is one of the commonly used measures of obesity. BMI is a ratio of a person’s weight to height. BMI is commonly used to classify weight as 'underweight', 'normal', 'overweight' or 'obese'.

Automatic recalculation

In this calculator, we have used the information from IOM Dietary Reference Intakes macronutrients report, 2002 to calculate EER. For BMI, we have used information from INSIGHT 16 A Publication of the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion March 2000.
Formulas and Tables
Heights (HT) are in meters, weights (WT) in kilograms.
Male 24 mos.: EER=( 89* WT- 100)+ 20
Female 24 mos.: EER=( 89* WT- 100)+ 20
Male 3- 8: EER= 88.5-( 61.9* AGE)+ PA*( 26.7* WT+ 903* HT)+ 20
Female 3- 8: EER= 135.3-( 30.8* AGE)+ PA*( 10* WT+ 934* HT)+ 20
Male 9- 18: EER= 88.5-( 61.9* AGE)+ PA*( 26.7* WT+ 903* HT)+ 25
Female 9- 18: EER= 135.3-( 30.8* AGE)+ PA*( 10* WT+ 934* HT)+ 25
