Indian foods to prevent heartburn

People suffering from chronic heartburn should eat whole-grain high-fiber high-potassium low-fat and alkaline foods

In each category, the preferred items are also listed

 

Breads

Preferred items: Roti made with Whole-grain wheat stone ground Atta, Bajra Roti

Other Items: Jowar Roti, Tandoori Roti, Naan Made with Whole-grain wheat Atta, Idli

Use Makhan (Raw Butter) to baste. Do not use commercial pasteurized butters, or Ghee to baste the skin surface

 

Rice

Preferred items: Brown Basmati Rice

Other Items: Other Brown Rice, Long grain Patna Rice

 

Dal Cholay Rajma

Preferred items: Decorticated split Moong (Dhuli Moong Dal) without Tarka (Bhagar, or tempering)

Other Items: Any Dal without Tarka, Cholay and Rajma without Fried Masala (Onions and spices fried in oil or Ghee)

 

Dairy products

Preferred item: Homemade Chach. This is skim butter milk with live culture

Other items: Dahi Yogurt with live culture

 

Fruits

Preferred Item: Papaya

Other items: Guava (specially purple) Amrood, Bananas, Pears, Cantaloupe (Kharbooza)

 

Vegetables

Preferred Items: Pumpkin (Kaddu), Shakarkandi ( Sweet potatoes boiled or roasted), Lima Beans

Other Items: Spinach (Paalak), Cabbage, Carrots, Simla Mirch (Sweet Bell Peppers), Mustard Greens ( Sarson Saag), Methi (Fenugreek greens), Cauliflower

 

Meats Poultry

Preferred Items: Tandoori Chicken, Boiled or Poached Eggs

Other Items: Any Tandoori Items: Tandoori Prawn, Tandoori Leg of lamb roast

 

Cooking oils and fats

Preferred Item: Canola oil

Pure Ghee, Un-refined Mustard oil (Kadwa Tel), Un-refined Peanut oil (Meetha Tel), Virgin Coconut oil

Raw butter (Homemade Makhan that is not pasteurized)

 

Basic Combination Foods

Khichri (Don't top with Ghee). If you want to top use raw butter (Makhan)

Dal Roti, Dal Chawal (Brown Basmati)
