Omega 3 Fatty acids Health BenefitsOmega 3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids. There are three types of Omega 3 acids: ALA (Alpha-liolenic acid) ALA, EPA (Eicosapentanoic acid) EPA, and DHA (Docosahexanoic acid). The ALA is 'essential' and can not be made by the body. ALA must be obtained from diet. The Body may synthesize ALA to EPA, and EPA to DHA, this may not be an efficient process. The efficient form would be to obtain all the three omega3 fatty acids from the diet.
Omega 3 Fatty Acid Food Sources
ALA (Alpha-liolenic acid)Health BenefitsAllergies, Autoimmune diseases, Blood pressure, Blood clotting, Cholesterol and Triglycerides, Eczema, Immunity, Lipid peroxide concentration, Lupus, Myocardial oxygenation, Rheumatoid arthritis, Stroke, Sjogren's syndrome Daily Intake for adults: 2,220 mg per day
DHA (Docosahexanoic acid)Health benefitsFetal brain development and growth, slows down the age related deterioration of serotonin and dopamine (memory, attention, cognition, behavior), slows down the age related deterioration of eye (retinal detachment and macular degeneration), increase density of serotonin and dopamine receptors in the brain and nervous system, increase endogenous dopamine levels by 40-75%. Helpful for: Alzheimer's disease Asthma Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) Bipolar disorder Chronic fatigue syndrome Chronic pain Depression Diabetic neuropathy Hypertriglyceridemia Insulin resistance Irritable bowel syndrome Memory problems Migraine headaches Reproductive problems Schizophrenia Thyroid hormone function Daily Intake for adults: 220 mg per day
EPA (Eicosapentanoic acid)Health BenefitsSlows down the age related deterioration of eye (retinal detachment and macular degeneration), may protect against dilantin induced teratogenesis, may be able to salvage cardiac muscle cells from injury related to oxygen deprivation, reduce the magnitude of the stress response. Helpful for: Borderline personality disorder Chronic fatigue syndrome Migraines Schizophrenia Daily Intake for adults: 220 mg per day |
