What is Masala?

In general Masala means a blend or combination of spices. Beyond that, you have to know the context how the word Masala is used

 

Many dry spices blends (Ground combination of spices) are signified as Masala. Popular spice blends are: Garam Masala, Chaat Masala, and Cholay Masala

 

Garam Chai, or just Chai is hot tea latte, a sweetened hot tea with milk. Masala in 'Garam Masala Chai' signifies that a Masala (combination of aromatic herbs and spices) was also added during brewing process.

 

At the onset of making curry, onions garlic ginger and a combination of spices are fried to make a spicy paste as a foundation for curry. This spicy paste is called Masala

 

A popular dish in UK is called Chicken Tikka Masala. Tikka a baked chicken Kebab. The Masala refers to the spicy aromatic Dip.

 

Many spicy zesty damp curries (almost dry) are called Masala e.g., Chana Masala
