What is Pudla and Cheela?

Pudla and Cheela are primarily made with Legume flours such as Besan, Moong Dal, etcetera. Both items are popular as breakfast items. The Cheela is thinner and more like a crepe, the Pudla is thicker like a pancake.

Cheela is a spicy crepe comparable to Dosa. It is thin and crispy. The fresh vegetables in making Cheela are limited to finely chopped Cilantro, Serrano, and Onions. This keeps the thickness as thin. The batter for Cheela has the same consistency as Dosa batter.

Pudla is thick like a pancake. The fresh vegetables used in making Cheela can be added to Pudla batter. In addition, larger vegetable cuts such as sweet peas, coarsely grated carrots  may be added. The batter for Pudla is slightly thicker than that for Cheela.

Over the time, the distinctions have disappeared. The names can be used interchangeably. The distinction is arbitrary except for the state of origin.
