What is Fenugreek?

Fenugreek is used as a spice (whole or ground seeds), herb (dried leaves) and vegetable (fresh leaves)

In North India Fenugreek seeds are called Methi, the dried leaves are called Kasoori-Methi, the fresh leaves are called Methi-Patta.

Fenugreek seeds are soaked along with rice and Urad to make batter for making Idli and Dosa. Whole and ground Fenugreek seeds are fried in cooking-fat to make curries. Whole fenugreek seeds are used in making pickles. The dried leaves (Kasoori Methi) are added to curries for color,  bitter flavor and strong aroma. The fresh leaves (Methi Patta) are used as vegetable to make curries such as Gajar Methi (Carrots and Fenugreek), and kneaded into making dough for Paratha (Griddle fried flat bread)

The Fenugreek seeds are a galactagogue, and can increase production of breast milk up to nine fold.

Fenugreek seeds have been found to help with blood glucose among diabetics

Fenugreek seeds also mimic flavor of Maple syrup. In United States Fenugreek seeds are added as a flavor to make low-cost maple syrup.

Fenugreek seeds are soaked in water and ground with yogurt. The mixture is rubbed into scalp and applied to hair. After 20 minutes it is rinsed off with plain water. It is supposed to prevent hair loss, add body and luster to hair.

There are controversial studies that may support a suggestion that Fenugreek seeds help reduce bad cholesterol.

In United States powdered fenugreek seeds are sold in capsules on the internet for breast enhancement. Of course, this is primarily a gimmick.
