What is Green and Black Cardamoms? Illaichi

There are two types of Cardamoms used in India. They are common in taste, but entirely different plants.


Green Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum): In Hindi it is called 'Chhoti illaichi' (small cardamom), or 'Hari Illaichi' (Green Cardamom). The plants are grown on the western shores of South India. It is used as a mouth freshener, make Garam Chai, and many types of desserts.

Black Cardamom (Amomum subulatum): In Hindi, it is called 'Bari illaichi' (Big Cardamom) or "Kali illaichi" (Black Cardamom). The plants are grown in Eastern Himalayan region (Nepal and Sikkim). It is used in making Curries.
