What are traditional Indian breakfasts?

Traditional Indian breakfasts vary from region to region, consisting of: fried breads, curries, crepes and pancakes.

In Hindi, Breakfast is called 'Naashta'. Traditional breakfast is a heavy high calorie meal with a few exceptions.

#1 'Khichri'

Khichri is one of the best documented breakfast of the Moghul emperors starting from Akbar through Aurangzeb. In the royal kitchen of Akbar, Khichri was available around the clock every day. Khichri is made of Rice and split skinless Moong beans with few spices. Lots of Ghee and nuts may be added. Khichri is normally eaten with yogurt. During Raj, British created a dish with rice haddock and eggs, and gave it phonetically similar name, Kedgeree.

Over time, Khichri became a dinner time item for labor class, eventually losing its dominant position, as a breakfast item. Still, it is routinely given to patients with stomach ailments or recovering from chronic illnesses
