Are Indians born craving Curry?I used to say 'Taste is acquired for any food, even Indians aren't born craving curry.' It is not complete. They may not crave curry, but they prefer curry flavors
The flavor of foods eaten by mother enter the amniotic fluid and breast milk. In uterus, the developing fetus swallows the amniotic fluid getting accustomed to the flavors. During nursing, the infant gets accustomed to flavors present in the breast milk. When weaned from breast-feeding, the infants prefer their first solid foods with the flavors present in amniotic and breast milk. Yes! Indian children are born with, and grow up for a preferred taste for curries eaten by their mother. They may not crave curry, but they prefer the curry flavors
According to a University of Copenhagen study, the duration of flavor in the breast milk depends on the foods eaten by the mother. After the mother has eaten the food, the flavors last from one to eight hours. Different flavors peak at different time. The Denmark study included food flavors of: Bananas, Licorice, Caraway seeds, and Menthol. Caraway is similar to Cumin seeds and Shahi Jeera. Menthol is similar to Cardamoms. Other studies have included Carrots, Garlic. Some nurses have reported the effect on the behavior of infants after nursed by mother after eating foods to include: Onions, Chili peppers, Curry powder, Citrus juices, and cinnamon. The Denmark study tries to draw two conclusions: 1) Mother's diet affects the children's preference for taste of foods. 2) Breast-fed children are more receptive to try new flavors than bottle-fed children. |
