What are good fetal brain foods?
Choline, Omega 3 and Omega 6 are needed for basic structure and neuron development
The fetal brain just about triples in mass during the third trimester. This need continues during lactation for nursing mothers.
Ideal food source for Choline is Hardboiled eggs, and beef liver. For vegetarians, Choline should not be problem. Milk, lentils, and garbanzo beans provide sufficient amounts.
Omega 3 is ample in fatty fish. A 12 ounce serving of Salmon per week is adequate. For vegetarians, we have to rely on nuts and seeds. Flaxseeds provide both Omega3 and Omega 6 followed by walnuts and almonds. Spinach also has omega 3 fatty acids. For cooking, canola oil is a good source for all the omega fatty acids.
Now a days, many of the infant formulas are fortified with Choline, and omega acids (DHA, ARA).
