How to choose a Roti Maker?

Roti maker combines the functions of Rolling pin (Belan), Rolling board (Chakla), and the Griddle (Tava)

You put a ball of the dough, press the handle it will roll out. The heat elements will start cooking. You may cook keeping the cover open to puff the Roti.

Uses

The current Roti makers allow to make Roti, Pratha with the power on. You can also use the Roti Maker as a Tortilla or Roti press to roll out dough to make Poori. Current designs allow a 1 mm thick Roti.

Features

Griddle

The griddle must be made of forged Aluminum to allow even heat distribution. It should have a non-stick surface. 8" griddle will do the job for making Roti or Pratha. I prefer 10" griddle size. This allows large Punjabi style Paratha.

Power

The manufacturers normally specify the power in terms of wattage. Unfortunately, it is a meaningless specification. What you need is the cooking surface temperature specification. The cooking surface should be able to reach 425º F.

The power depends on a lot of factors, such as size of the griddle and the materials used to cast the griddle. On average, for a 10" griddle you need 750 Watts for the griddle and about 250 watts for the cover.

The wattage is a misleading factor.

Indicator light

One indicator light is needed to know when the griddle is sufficiently hot to cook.

Notes

Cooking with Roti maker needs a little practice.

1. You will have to make the dough with a bit more water, otherwise the Roti will come out dry.

2. The griddle and the cover must be non-stick, still wipe them with cooking oil to avoid the dough from sticking.
