How to set flatware silverware?The flatware and is set around the dinner plate according to old British etiquettes, slightly modified in use by the American setting. Flatware settingThe flatware is set 1 to 2" away from the edge of the table. The individual piece of the flatware are placed in order of use, the farthest from the dinner plate are the first pieces used.
KnifesKnifes should be placed on the right-hand side of the guest. The blade should be facing to the left of the guest, or the dinner plate. There may be up to three types of knifes including steak knife The butter spreader is placed diagonally on the bread plate.
SpoonsSpoons should be placed to the right of the knifes. There may be up to three types of spoons: coffee/tea spoon, soup spoon, desert spoon.
ForksForks should be placed on the left-hand side of the guest with the exception of the oyster fork. The oyster fork goes to the right of the soup spoon. The salad fork is place to the right of the dinner fork. There may be up to three types of forks: seafood, dinner, and salad/dessert.
ExceptionThe desert fork and desert spoons may also be place on the desert plates. In this case, the fork handle points to left, the spoon handle points right.
Other ItemsGlasswareGlasses are set above the dinner plate to the right in order of use. This glassware may consist of: Water glass, wine glass, champagne flute. Coffee Tea CupsThese cups are put out after the dinner. Coffee teaspoons may be put on the saucer plates. Coffee mugs aren’t used for a formal table setting. Dessert PlatesDesert plates are put out after the dinner and along with coffee tea. The dessert fork and desert spoon may be placed on the dessert plate. |
