How to choose an electric blender?

Uses

In an Indian home electric blender may be used for following

1. Making Chutney

2. Grinding spice blends such as Garam Masala or Curry powder. You may still elect to use already ground Turmeric, Fenugreek seeds, Mustard seeds etcetera.

3. Make Batter for Dosa, Vada

4. Puree for soups

5. Make fresh vegetable and fruit smoothies.

6. Make alcoholic beverages such as Mango daiquiri

Features

Container/Carafe

Most of the carafes have a capacity of 44 oz or 5½ Cups. Larger size 64 oz (½ Gallon) are available. My preference: 44 oz .

The Carafes may be made of plastic, stainless steel or glass. I prefer glass for two reasons: You can see as the food is being processed, and they are heavier. Heavier container provides stability.
The blades may or may not be permanently attached to the Carafes. I prefer the carafes with separate blades . It makes it easier to clean the Carafe.

Some of the Carafes have a built in spigot, specially for smoothies. I don't care for spigot. This just complicates the cleaning process.

Power

Power rating vary from 250 to 500 watts. A 400 watt blender is good enough for most of the applications. A higher wattage may be needed for larger capacity.

Speeds/Features

Blenders may have up to 16 speeds. These are all un-necessary. I like following features

Three speeds : Off, low, High

Desired features : Reverse, Pulse operation

Controls

Controls may be rotary knob, push buttons, or a touch pad. I prefer touch pad . Touch pad has minimum wear and tear, as well as easier to clean.
