What is diabetes?
If the body does not generate sufficient insulin to bring blood glucose level down, we have diabetes. There are 3 types of diabetes.
When we eat food that has calories, the food is converted to glucose. If we eat carbohydrates, they convert to glucose almost instantaneously within two hours. Proteins convert to glucose in 3 to 4 hours. The fats get converted to glucose in six hours or longer. In response, body generates insulin, so the glucose goes to the cells especially the muscles, and liver where they are used or stored as energy or making hormones, and the glucose level in the blood comes down. If the body does not generate sufficient insulin to bring the blood glucose down, we have diabetes.
There are 3 types of diabetes. 95% of the people have Type 2 diabetes. In Type 2, diabetes, the body is either not making enough insulin or is insulin resistant. Type 1 diabetes normally happens in children, where the body produces no insulin. The Type 1 diabetics take insulin everyday. The third most common is gestation diabetes that happens in about 40% of the women during pregnancy.
