Diabetes and Counting Carbohydrates

Meals are planned by Counting carbohydrates because Carbohydrates convert to glucose sooner than either the proteins or fats.

I will cover only the basics of this meal planning.

All foods that have calories raise glucose level. However, the biggest contributor is Carbohydrates. In this approach meats and oils are not included as they contain little or no carbohydrates. The vegetables are not included as they contain very little carbohydrates. Still, the meats should be lean, and saturated fats avoided. Only three groups are used to count Carbohydrates.
1. Breads & Starches
2. Fruits
3. Milk

The approach is based on simple assumption that each gram of carbohydrate raises blood glucose based on body weight as follow:
3 points if you weigh 200 pounds
4 points if you weigh 150 pounds
5 points if you weigh 100 pounds

Each serving for this approach consists of 12 to 15 grams of carbohydrates. One needs to create a 'Carbohydrate to Insulin ratio' and adjust the Carbohydrate intake depending on blood glucose reading. The carbohydrate intake timing depends on blood glucose level, time of day, exercise, and insulin intake.
