Chana Dal Halwa Halva (Chickpea Cake) Recipe

The dessert is made with 'Desi Chana' (not same as Garbanzo bean), Ghee nuts sugar and milk

This is a common dessert in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Ingredients

1. Chana Dal (Split skinless chickpeas): 1 Cup
2. Ghee (Clarified butter): ¼ Cup
3. Cashews split: ¼ Cup
4. Almonds Slivered: ¼ Cup
5. Sugar: 1 Cup
6. Whole milk: 1 Cup
7. Cardamom seeds: ½ teaspoon

 

Method

1. Pre-soak Chana Dal in water over-night. If you do not want to presoak, put Chana Dal in water, bring it to a boil. Cook five minutes. Shut off heat. Cover pan and wait about two hours.

2. Drain and rinse. Grind into a paste with minimum water.

3. Heat a heavy bottom pan with Ghee. Add Dal paste. Fry till most of the moisture is gone, and the Dal starts to change color to slightly brown.
4. Add Cashews and Almonds  and fry for couple of more minutes.
5. Add remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil. Turn down heat. Keep simmering till the mixture is thickened to a nice lose dough.
