How to sterilize pickling jars?

The jars must be sterilized to kill pathogens and spoilage microorganisms

Hot-sun Method

In the olden days, Imrit baan (glazed porcelain jar) was used to store pickles. The Imrit baan were washed in soapy water and rinsed. The washed Imrit baan was putout in the dry hot sun at noon time for four hours. The UV rays killed many of the bacteria. The sun heated and sterilized the jars.

 

Oven Method

Wash jars in soapy water and rinse. Pre-heat oven to 225º F for 20 minutes. Bake empty jars for 30 minutes on the middle rack.

 

Dish washer

Most of the dishwashers are equipped with sanitization cycle. This is sufficient

 

Kettle method

This is common for sterilizing canning jars. The jars are washed and rinsed in soapy water, added to a kettle full of water. The kettle is covered. The water is brought to a boil. The jars remain immersed in boiling water for 15 minutes.
