Cholesterol and Health

From various studies , it is apparent that South Asian (India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) living in United States, Canada, and UK, are at higher rate of heart diseases than other ethnic groups. Another study , characterizes them with HDL-C, elevated triglycerides, and abdominal obesity. Abdominal adiposity may be present even when the BMI is normal. They are also at higher risk than their siblings living in India except for urban areas. Coronary heart disease (CHD) seems to be the disease of affluence.
I will use information from The  National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) ATPIII and 2005 USDA Dietary Guidelines.

Liver synthesizes 1200 to 1500 mg of new Cholesterol everyday by metabolizing dietary fat. Human body needs cholesterol to build cells, hormones, support neurons, synthesize vitamin D and help digestive system. On the other hand, cholesterol can also form in  gallstones, and deposit fatty acids (plaques) in the arteries leading to heart attacks.
