Shallaki (Gajabhakshya) Boswelia serrata

These trees grow in dry hilly forests of Rajasthan in India. A deep gash is cut into the trunk, a bamboo basket is tied to the trunk to collect the highly fragrant sap. The sap is reduced to a resin. The resin is used as incense in the house and temples, as well as for medicinal purposes.

Latin name: Boswelia serrata- Burseraceae
English name:
Indian Olibanum tree
Sanskrit / Ayurveda name: Gajabhakshya, meaning favorite food of elephants

Hindi: Shallaki
It is not Guggul, but sometimes it is called 'Salai Guggul' due to many similarity, especially both are resin gum
 

Ayurveda Properties

- Rasa: Astringent Bitter Sweet
- Virya: Warm
- Vipaka: Pungent
- Guna: Light, Rough
- Dosha: Balance (Decrease) Kapha and Vata

 

Traditional Ayurveda Uses

- Treat hemorrhoids
- Help food digestion and absorption leading to normal color of feces

- Relieve joint pains
- Rejuvenate skin

 

Modern Uses

- Treat Rheumatoid Arthritis. It is NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), safe for liver kidney
- Treat Osteoarthritis with no side effects as produced by Cox02 inhibitors
- Treat Irritable Bowel disease (Crohn's disease) or ulcerative colitis
