What are three Dosha of Ayurveda? Inter-relationship of Elements Rasa and Dosha
Every human is born with a set of three unique ongoing constitutional processes called Dosha. These processes effect the physical mental and spiritual well being.
The three Dosha are: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. One or two of the Dosha may be dominant, while the
remaining Dosha are secondary.
Vata is related to wind, Pitta is related to bile, and Kapha is related to phlegm.
According to Ayurveda, the body is composed of five elements:
Ether (void or space), Air, Fire,
Water, and Earth (dust). Each Dosha is composed of one pair of
basic elements:
Vata: Air, and Ether
Pitta: Fire, and Water
Kapha: Water, and Earth
For health, we eat foods to balance (decrease) Dosha, and avoid foods that aggravate Dosha.
Vata
Primary elements: Air and Ether
Physical profile: Small body frame, Skin: Dry and rough, Hair: Dry, average amountRelationship to the the body: Colon
Physical characteristics: Prone to gas and constipation
Normal state: Dry, light, mobile and cold.
Aggravated state: Cause flatulence, constipation, tremors, spasms, asthma,
rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, as well many neurological problems.
Balancing (decreasing) tastes: Sweet Salty and sour
Aggravating (increasing) tastes: Bitter, Astringent, and Pungent
Avoid: Minimize beans (Chickpeas, Red Kidney beans, Urad), cold foods, raw foods
Pitta
Primary elements: Fire and Water
Physical profile: Medium body frame, Skin: Fair and prone to sun burns, Hair: Fine straight thinning
Relationship to body: Small intestines
Physical characteristics: Strong appetites and good digestion, Prone to hyperacidity and inflammatory disorders
Normal state: Sharp and oily
Aggravated state: Cause hyperacidity, ulcers, skin eruptions, chronic fatigue, Crohn's disease, colitis, gout and numerous inflammatory disorders.
Balancing (decreasing) tastes: Sweet Astringent, and bitter
Aggravating (increasing) tastes: Salty, Sour, and Pungent
Avoid: Greasy, hot spicy, salty and sour tastes
Kapha
Primary elements: Earth and Water
Physical profile: Large body frame, Skin: Oily moist and pale, Hair: Thick and plenty bushy
Relationship to body: Lungs and stomach
Physical characteristics: Prone to weight gain, obesity, sluggish digestion, lethargy and congestive disorders
Normal state: Heavy, cold, damp and static.
Aggravated state: Cause obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, edema, asthma, tumors and a variety of congestive problems.
Balancing (decreasing) tastes: Bitter, Astringent, and Pungent
Aggravating (increasing) tastes Sweet, Sour, and Salty
Avoid: Dairy, sweets, refined fats and carbohydrates.
What is Ama?
Ama is toxins created from poorly digested foods due to aggravated Dosha. Accumulated Ama results in poor: vitality, immunity and metabolism.
