Hearing loss AgingAs we age, we become hard of hearing. It starts out with loss of hearing high frequency sounds, followed by hard of hearing especially with loud noisy background. Age related hearing loss is not reversible, and we wind up using hearing aides.
The age-related hearing loss is called Presbycusis. The inner ear called cochlea is lined with about 20,000 hair cells. When the sound waves hit these hair cells, they generate electrical impulses that are carried by auditory nerves to the brain for interpretation as sound that we hear. The hair cells do not regenerate. With age, these hair cells start to die due to oxidant stress. The hearing loss is slow. It varies from person to person. A person may have different hearing loss in each ear.
Nutritionist believe Antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, E, beta-carotene, selenium latch on to the free radicals and thus prevent hair cells from dying. Vitamin EIt should be noted that Vitamin E is degraded with heat, so raw Almonds are a better source of Vitamin E than the roasted Almonds. One should intake about 400 IU of Vitamin E per day. Natural Vitamin is more effective than synthetic Vitamin E. When comparing, 1 mg of Vitamin is same as 1.5 IU. Carotene and Vitamin CYellow Orange produce are good source of Alpha-carotene, Beta-carotene, Beta-cryptoxanthin, Zeaxanthin, Vitamin C. It should be noted that Vitamin C is lost with air and cooking. Therefore raw produce is more preferable.
