Cataract and agingCataract starts to develop after the age of 50, this is a condition where the lens over the eye becomes cloudy impairing the vision. The lens is made up of protein and water. Normally it is clear and lets the light to pass through. As we age, the bonding changes and the proteins may clump together blocking the light. If it is not treated in a timely fashion, it can eventually result in total blindness.
The symptoms include blurred vision, double vision in one eye, colors appear faded, sensitivity to bright sun light, poor night vision, spots in your vision, halo around the lighted objects.
Cataracts can not be prevented, the development can be delayed by wearing sunglasses to protect eyes from the UV light. Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Selenium, Beta carotene, Lycopene and Zeaxanthin help protect cell walls, cell structure and genetic materials within the cells.
Yellow and orange colored vegetables / fruits are a good source of Beta Carotene and Vitamin
Lutein and Zeaxanthin are found in green vegetables such as Spinach, Kale, and Collards
