South Asian (Indian) Skin AgeingSouth Asian Skin Structure and Pigmentation EpidermisSouth Asians (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka) have darker skin. The Melanin acts as a sun screen and slows down the signs of photo-ageing. The photo-ageing signs are delayed among South Asians by 10 to 20 years as compared to Caucasians. South Asians also have smaller wrinkled area at any given age.
DermisSouth Asians have a better hydrated skin than Caucasians. It does not mean that South Asian skin does not age. With age, collagen and elastin are reduced, the synthesis slows down, and break down increases. The loss of elastin and collagen is same as that for Caucasian. The skeletal structure does not support the thick skin effectively in the middle section of the face called nasolabial folds. This results in jowls and baggy eyes. These signs of ageing appear before any other signs among South Asians. These signs are more prominent than Caucasians due to thicker skin (weight) of South Asians. The loss of collagen and elastin causes wrinkles, sagging around neck and jowls. At a minimum, we still need antioxidants to protect skin from collagen break down. Subcutaneous FatThis layer beneath Dermis connects to muscles and bones. The adipose (fat tissue) becomes larger and the muscle mass starts to decline. These can only be controlled through proper caloric intake management and exercise. Unspent calories are stored away in fat tissue by the body, and low physical activity results in loss of muscle mass. |
